Health and Wellness Programs
If you are a LOWLINC member or volunteer all of these programs are open to you. If you are not a LOWLINC member, our Community events are open to all! Many of our programs are year-round, others are limited series. If you are interested in registering for an upcoming event, please call (855) 569-5462 or click here to view our event calendar.
Care Partner Discussion Group Community
Caring for a loved one can be deeply meaningful, but it can also be emotionally and physically demanding. LOWLINC offers a Care Partner Discussion Group as a space to connect with others who understand the unique experiences, challenges, and rewards of caregiving. The group meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Lake of the Woods Church and is open to anyone in the community who identifies as a caregiver, care partner, or provides support to a family member living with a health condition. During each meeting, participants have the opportunity to share successes, discuss challenges, and exchange ideas and solutions in a supportive and understanding environment. The group also serves as a resource for learning about local services, programs, and support options that may benefit both caregivers and their loved ones.
Clean Out Projects Community
Throughout the year, LOWLINC hosts decluttering events where community members and volunteers can drop off unused or unwanted items for donation or special disposal. These projects include a closet and linens clean-out, electronics recycling clean-out, medical supply clean-out, and under the sink and garage clean-out.
Evidence Based Wellness Programs
LOWLINC partners with Encompass Community Supports to bring evidence-based programs to our members and volunteers.
Matter of Balance Community
Matter of Balance is a 6 week session where participants can improve their confidence at home or out and about by learning to control fall risks. During the first two sessions, participants engage in learning through interactive presentations. In the later 4 weeks, participants are guided in gentle exercises to increase muscle strength and joint flexibility, either standing or seated. Light lunch provided.
Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) Community
CDSMP consists six weekly sessions that run for 2 and a half hours. CDSMP has been found to improve healthful behaviors (exercise, coping, and communications with physicians), improve health status (fatigue, disability, social activities, and health distress), and decrease days in the hospital. Interactive discussions at the workshops include: managing symptoms, setting weekly goals, effective problem-solving, nutrition and exercise.
LOWLINC Walking Program
Each Friday LOWLINC participants spend an hour walking in the gym or, weather permitting, on the Sweetbriar trail. Participants are encouraged to walk at their own pace and chat with walking friends. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other LOWLINC members and volunteers!
Music, Memory, and Movement
This program invites participants of all abilities together to enjoy music, share laughter, engage in memory-supporting activities, participate in gentle movement, and connect with others. Examples of past Music, Memory, and Movement events are sing-alongs, drum circles, and dancing classes.
Presentation Series
LOWLINC offers a variety of presentation series programs, including our monthly flagship Speaker Series. Many of these are open to community.
Ask the Doctor Series Community
LOWLINC collaborates with UVA Health to present monthly sessions with a UVA medical specialist. During this 1 and a half hour event, the specialist provides a comprehensive presentation on their field tailored to the needs, realities, and concerns among older adults followed by a Q&A session. We work hard to bring in specialists that work in the Orange and Culpeper area so participants can book appointments with the presenter! UVA Health representatives are also present to answers other questions about the UVA Health network.
End-of-Life Miniseries Community
This Miniseries will provide education on topics related to death and dying while inspiring feelings of calm and preparedness. Topics will include: "What is a Death Doula?", burial options, and dementia directives.
Speaker Series Community
The Speaker Series is a year-round monthly lecture series where LOWLINC invites a topic specialist to bring their expertise to the greater LOWLINC community in a 1 and a half hour presentation with Q&A.
Ready or Not: Planning for the Next Chapter of your Life Community
The Ready or Not program is a 5-month small-group facilitated workshop where participants meet once a month to discuss planning for the later phases of their lives. Facilitators guide participants through the Ready or Not workbook and group discussions to spark conversations about visions and fears, challenges and opportunities that will impact their ability to age in place. This program is made possible with a collaboration with Aging Together. Special thanks to Queen Anne’s at Home for developing this program.
Vaccine Drive-Through Clinic -- Annual Community
Each year, LOWLINC teams up with Orange Pharmacy to host our Drive-Thru Vaccine Clinic. Vaccines are administered by a pharmacist or technician, who are also be available to answer questions. Vaccines available typically include the COVID-19 and Flu vaccines.
Walk & Roll -- Annual Community
Each year, LOWLINC hosts an awareness and fundraising walk where participants enjoy an afternoon of friendship and fun. We encourage participants to bring family and friends to enjoy music, food, family-friendly activities and a ½ mile walk around the Sweetbriar Trail in Lake of the Wood's own Sweetbriar Park. LOWLINC gives a special thanks to the sponsors and community partners who support the walk! There is no cost to participate. Click here to register today!
