Workshops and Clinics

LOWLINC takes its responsibility to the broader community seriously, sponsoring programs in which residents of both Lake of the Woods and the surrounding area are urged to participate. Among these programs are workshops and clinics that promote health and wellness among older adults. We partner with various groups and organizations to carry out these programs. These are some of the events sponsored to date.

Flu Vaccination Clinic

LOWLINC partnered with our local CVS pharmacy to conduct a drive-through flu vaccination clinic for Lake of the Woods residents on October 3, 2020. CVS provided the staff to verify paperwork, check temperatures and administer both the regular and high-dose flu vaccines, giving out 206 shots. LOWLINC supplied volunteers for traffic control and hospitality.

Stop the Bleed Workshop

With the Mary Washington Hospital Trauma Team and the LOW Volunteer Rescue Squad, LOWLINC conducted a Stop the Bleed workshop for members, volunteers, and the LOW community. Forty-two LOW residents learned and practiced techniques to use in an emergency to stop excessive bleeding. June 29, 2019.
Hands-only CPR Workshop

A hands-only CPR workshop was conducted with Mary Washington Healthcare and LOW Fire and Rescue. The workshop was attended by 64 LOW residents. In addition to CPR instruction, staff from MWHC also demonstrated the Heimlich Maneuver for choking and reviewed steps for using the Heartstart Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and performing infant CPR. September 5, 2019.
CDSM Workshop

As part of our continuing collaboration with Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services, LOWLINC  hosted a six-week workshop on Chronic Disease Self-Management. The workshop gave participants tools and strategies to manage their chronic health conditions. October 1 through November 12, 2019.

Medicare Workshop

LOWLINC and AARP Locust Grove Chapter 5239 co-sponsored an afternoon workshop entitled “Know Your Medicare." Attended by 85 LOW residents and community members, the workshop featured an overview of Medicare and details about Part D prescription drug plan selection. October 10, 2018.

Health Matters Presentations

Funded by a grant from the Culpeper Wellness Foundation, LOWLINC developed a “Health Matters Toolkit” that empowers older adults to be better prepared for appointments with healthcare providers, and made 13 presentations to more than 350 older adults at LOW and in Orange County. Fall 2016.

Dementia Friends Workshop

Several LOWLINC volunteers have trained as "Dementia Champions," enabling them to conduct Dementia Friends Information Sessions that give members of the community tips and tools for successfully interacting with people who have dementia. LOWLINC conducted a Dementia Friends program for members of the LOW Volunteer Rescue squad. November 2019.
